PHOSPHATES in various forms are used in many household and commercial cleaning products. They are most prevalent in powdered laundry and dishwashing compounds where they are employed for their water softening, performance boosting, soil suspension and rinse assisting properties at rates of up to 45%.
Whilst they are very efficient detergent additives, they are NUTRIENTS to our effluent systems artificially fertilising the growth of algae and poisoning our marine environment. The harmful effects that they can inflict on our ecosystem is such that it has prompted many governments around the world to ban or severely restrict their use.
FILLERS AND EXTENDERS are extensively used in household detergents for a number of reasons.
They aid the processing of spray-dried powders, giving them a fluffy light texture. They "bulk out" products, reducing the active concentration and lowering the manufacturing cost .
These fillers are generally in the form of sodium sulphate or sodium chloride that have no beneficial effect on the performance of the product. They require the consumer to use up to twice the amount of the product than would be necessary to achieve a similar result were no fillers present.
